I always love visiting the charming Garden District with its oak-shaded streets. You will find a diverse mix of homes, from single-story cottages to the grand historic mansions and lavish gardens of St. Charles Avenue.  Boutiques and antique shops sit alongside fine-dining restaurants, casual cafes and local bars on and around Magazine Street on the south end of the neighborhood.

I really like the art galleries and antique stores on Magazine Street which runs through the Garden District and Uptown. It is not touristy compared to the French Quarter. The area between Louisiana and Napoleon is quite good. There are a number of good restaurants as well.

Once a month, the Arts New Orleans has an art market in Marsalis Harmony featuring art and handicrafts from local artists. It is at the corner of S. Carrollton and S. Claiborne Avenue in Uptown. You can take the Saint Charles Streetcar line to the last stop.

Walk or drive through the Garden District with its wonderful homes. Commander’s Palace in the Garden District, at 1403 Washington Ave., is one of the best restaurants in the city. I have had some wonderful meals there over the years.

I have been reading great reviews about the Henry Howard Hotel. It is located in a beautiful mansion in the Lower Garden District around the corner from Magazine Street.  The rooms are beautifully designed. They also have The Parlor which features pastries and coffee in the morning and cocktails in the evening. 2041 Prytania St. I would love to stay there on a future trip!
