Nara can be easily reached by train or by car from Kyoto. Founded in 710, it was for 74 years Japan’s first capital. Make sure you see Nara Park, a 1,300 acre park were most of the temples are located. You will see many tamed deer. Make sure to explore the Todaiji Temple with its Great Buddha and Great Buddha hall and the Kasuga Shrine, the most famous Shinto shrine in Nara, with its 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns that line the approach road and walkways. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Time permitting you might also visit the Nara National Museum which I did not see.
