Lakeside and Harbert are primarily residential and beach communities just north of Union Pier. I always love going when I am in the area. Great Chicago friends now live there, which makes the trip even more fun for me.

My local friends rave about Judith Racht Gallery located right off of Red Arrow Highway at 13707 Prairie Rd. They have a number of her pieces in their new home. She carries quality art, furnishings and accessories. I have been in the past to their Outsiders Outside Art Fair, held every Labor Day Weekend for over 20 years featuring outsider folk and visionary art.

On my recent trip, I enjoyed dinner at Cafe Gulistan, a casual spot, offering Kurdish cuisine along with Turkish and Lebanese wines. I thought the food was excellent. I enjoyed the combo platter and the grilled shrimp marinated in a curry, lemon sauce and served with an apricot chutney, basmati rice and vegetables. The Lebanese red wine was very good as well.

The Lakeside Inn: This is a 31-room rustic inn on the beach in Lakeside. It is a National and State of Michigan Historic Site. It is known for its 100 ft. porch with rockers. The Cafe is a popular local restaurant. If you want rustic, and not a fancy place to stay, this could be a fun experience.
