There is a huge coffee scene in Portland. Check out the following spots:

Stumptown Coffee: Probably the best is Stumptown Coffee. Started in Portland, you can now find Stumptown cafes in Seattle, LA and New York. From the small, casual shop at the Ace Hotel (1026 SW Stark) to the larger location downtown at 128 SW Third, with its hip crowd and music, you will find great coffee drinks and large crowds. The original shop, opened in 1999, and is at 4525 SE Division, just past the growing restaurant strip.

Grendel’s Coffee House: A fun, cozy local’s spot, at 729 E. Burnside, across from the Jupiter Hotel.

Barista: With three locations in town, check out the location at 1725 NE Alberta, while shopping in the neighborhood.

Dragonfly Coffee House and Bakery: Located at 2387 NW Thurman, a block from 23rd, is a casual local coffee house with attractive indoor as well as outdoor seating. It is a favorite local’s hangout and perfect on a typical cloudy Portland day.

The NY Times also recommends Coava at 1200 SE Grand Ave., Heart Coffee Roasters at 2211 E. Burnside, Sterling Coffee Roasters at 2120 NW Glisan and Red E Café at 1004 N. Killingsworth St.
