Rather than staying in a large hotel, I recommend staying in the luxurious riads of Marrakesh.

Les Jardins de la Medina: I loved staying here. It was a former princess’ riad with century-old gardens that has been transformed into a very attractive contemporary boutique hotel. The restaurant was lovely and a perfect place to rest after a busy day in the Souks. I had a lovely room overlooking the gardens and pool.

Others to explore include Riad el Fenn with a contemporary art focus, Riad Joya a seven-suite luxury boutique hotel, Riad Star the former home of Josephine Baker in the 1940’s, Dar Fakir, The Selman and Riad Madani. Wallpaper* Magazine highly recommends the Riad Goloboy at the edge of the Medina for its outstanding design.

Still more wonderful riads with great designed spaces and rooms include Riad Nashira, Villa De Orangers, Riad AnaYelaLa Sultana, Riad Kaiss, Riad Noir d’Ivoire in the heart of the Medina, Riad Enija also in the Medina, Riad Lotus Privilege, the art deco Villa Makassar, Riad Le Farnatchi and Dar les Cigognes.

A little larger are the Royal Mansour and The Pearl.
