To take advantage of things to do in Buenos Aires, put on your walking shoes and explore the neighborhoods, museums and sights of this great city. Don’t miss:

Recoleta Cemetery is a must with its wide tree-lined streets and many marble mausoleums. It is where Evita is buried. It is marked Eva Duarte so make sure to find it.

Make sure to visit the Evita Museum at Lafinur 2988. This is a museum about the life of Evita or Eva Duarte Peron. It was very interesting with many exhibits and displays of her life and even some of her clothes.

Plaza de Mayo: Go to the Plaza on Thursday afternoon to see the Madres carrying their children’s pictures who disappeared between 1976 and 1983 during the military dictatorship.

Try to see a performance at the Teatro Colon. It is a beautiful renovated theater/opera house. Catch a performance or at least take a guided tour.

Feria de San Pedro Telmo: Go to San Pedro Telmo on Sunday for the antiques and flea market. It is really fun and you can find some great art finds. I found some amazing pieces in a gallery and also some pieces in the market. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm in Plaza Dorrego.

Make sure to spend some time in the area of town known as LaBoca. It is a colorful area with shops, galleries and cafes with people doing tango in the streets. It is a little touristy but really fun.

Spend some time walking around Palermo, Palermo Soho and Recoleta. These are great walking areas.

If you have an extra day, take the ferry boat to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay for lunch and shopping. Its historic center is a charming UNESCO World Heritage Site. Make sure to take your passport! There is beautiful colonial architecture, restaurants, shops and galleries. One of my favorite paintings in Chicago came from a gallery there!

I recommend using the taxi service Premium Radio Taxi at 5238-0000. It came highly recommended by the Sofitel Hotel as being very reputable. I used them a great deal and the service was excellent.

MALBA, The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, Avenida Fiqueroa Alcora 3415: Make sure to visit MALBA with one of the biggest collections of contemporary Latin American Art from Antonio Berni, Frida Kahlo, Wilfredo Lam and Diego Rivera. I thought the art was really amazing as was the building itself.

Puente de la Mujer: This is a sculptural walkway opened in 2001, designed by Santiago Calatrava, that spans the harbor and brings pedestrians from the city center into Puerto Madero. It was inspired by sounds of the tango and should be high on your list if you love great design.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Ave. Libertador 1473: A large museum housing Argentinian as well as European art, with works by Picasso, Monet, van Gogh, Rodin and Toulouse-Lautrec. It is well-worth the visit!

Book a trip to an Estancia or ranch outside of Buenos Aires near the town of San Antonio de Areco. We went to Los Candiles for lunch which was great fun. Estancia La Portena, Estancia La Benquerencia and Estancia Acelain are more highly recommended but are farther away and harder to do on a day trip.
