I have had two wonderful trips to Venice. On my first trip, as I passed wonderful old palaces along the Grand Canal, I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be wonderful to someday go to a masked ball in one of the palaces on the canal. On my next trip that wish came true. I read in the book 1000 Places to See Before you Die, that Carnivale or Carnival in Venice was on the list. It went on to say that one of the most wonderful balls open to everyone, unlike most that are private, is Il Ballo del Doge or Doge’s Ball. It is now held in the Scuola Grande delal Misericordia. I decided to go and found nine fun friends to join me for the night of a lifetime. It was an evening filled with strolling minstrels, wonderful food, period costumes, music, dancing and entertainment all in a magical atmosphere illuminated by thousands of candles. It was like you were living when Venice was at the height of its power and influence. It was Cirque de Soleil meets Mozart. Though somewhat expensive now, if you can go, you will love it. The town was full of masquerading revelers posing for pictures, and there were numerous concerts and events. The cafes were full of people in costumes that gave them a very historical feel. It was a really magical experience and I highly recommend you go once!
