Taj Lake Palace Hotel: This lovely hotel, the oldest in India, is located in the Maharana of Udaipur’s Summer residence in the middle of Lake Pichola that was built in the mid-18th century. It is a wonderful, luxury hotel that is decorated with multi-color mosaics, mirror work and inlaid tiles. There are also lovely gardens, lily ponds, courtyards and fountains. I had a wonderful room on the roof overlooking the lake and the city. This would be my hotel of choice while in Udaipur. You access the the hotel by boat.
The Oberoi Udaivilas, on the banks of Lake Pichola, gets wonderful reviews as well. It was built as an Indian palace.
City Palace: This is a huge palace on Lake Pichola which is a combination of Rajput military architecture and Mughal-style decorative techniques. It is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Part of it, Fateh Prakash Palace, is a luxury hotel with an attractive restaurant in Durbar Hall where we ate lunch and enjoyed the great views. The palace has beautiful ceilings and courtyards.
