Newport has many wonderful hotel options. My recommendations include:
The Bayberry Inn: I am so pleased that I chose to stay at The Bayberry Inn. This is a lovely inn in a great location in town. With free parking in a large lot, it was easy to walk downtown to shops and restaurants. It has seven beautifully designed king and queen suites with very elegant furnishings. The breakfasts were really excellent as well. It also has a helpful staff. I highly recommend it when you are in town. 20 Kay St.
Hotel Viking: Located at 1 Bellevue Avenue in Newport’s Historic Hill neighborhood, this is a luxury hotel that opened in 1926 and is part of Historic Hotels of America. The hotel has the One Bellevue restaurant, the Hill Market, an onsite cafe for coffee, pastries and more plus The Top of Newport, a rooftop bar and restaurant. I went for afternoon tea and loved the experience.
The Vanderbilt Hotel: An Auberge Resorts Collection property at 41 Mary St., this a a boutique hotel a short walk from the waterfront in Newport. It is located in a vintage Newport mansion built in 1909. They feature a number of rooms and suites along with The Vanderbilt Grill, The Bar and The Roof Deck with wonderful views of the harbor. I went for dinner at the Vanderbilt Grill and had a wonderful meal!
The Chanler at Cliff Walk: Located in a mansion on the famous Cliff Walk, The Chanler has 20 rooms and is in the perfect location on the Cliff Walk. You have a choice of rooms or villas. It was originally completed in 1873 as a summertime retreat by New York Congressman, John Winthrop Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward, the great granddaughter of the distinguished businessman and millionaire John Jacob Astor. Their restaurant Cara gets excellent reviews. They also have the more casual The Cafe at the Chanler and The Bar at the Chanler with a number of signature cocktails.
Castle Hill Inn: At 590 Ocean Drive, the Castle Hill Inn is located on a 40-acre estate. They have 33 rooms, suites and cottages. They also have two restaurants and a spa.
Recently reopened after an extensive renovation, the Cliffside Inn has 16 attractive rooms in a Victorian mansion from 1876. It was was the onetime home of artist Beatrice Turner. Pieces from the artist’s works dot the guest rooms and parlor spaces, as do turn-of-the-20th-century antiques and period-appropriate floral patterns. All of the rooms have working fireplaces and come with homemade sweets at turn-down each evening. It is part of the Lark Hotel group. I really like the contemporary design of all of their properties. 2 Seaview Ave.
In Newport, Lark Hotels also has colorful The Attwater at 22 Liberty St. and the equally colorful Gilded, a 17 room boutique hotel at 23 Brinley St. that was recently renovated as well.
