You can find some great casual spots for coffee, tea, ice cream and gelato, pastries and chocolates in San Miguel. There have been many new openings in the last few years.

Mexico is the ninth largest coffee producer in the world with three major regions in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz. The quality of the coffee here in San Miguel, sourced from these regions, is excellent.

My top recommendations include:

After moving to San Miguel from Belgium  in July 2022, Marie-Pascale Gérard and her son Paul, opened Wafflessence de Paul – Saveurs de Belgique in January, 2023. Their speciality are traditional Belgian waffles from City of Liege, some with chocolate or Belgian sugar. They also feature cookies, hot chocolate and coffee

They come from six generations of her family that have been manufacturing sugar, used in these waffles since 1847. They moved to a great new location downtown at Casa Europa at San Francisco 23. I  loved the waffle with two pieces of Belgian chocolate and a small cup of hot chocolate.  They now have a larger menu that includes savory as well as sweet options including chocolate mousse and crème brûlée. I then went back for a group brunch and enjoyed the Belgian waffle with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon along with a yummy chocolate mousse for dessert.

However, the government announced plans to rennovate the building, so they moved to a new location on October 25, 2025 at Sterling Dickinson #2, inside the Tres Fuentes Boutique Hotel.  I stopped in on their first day and then went a week later for lunch. It is always a great experience. They have an expanded dinner menu. A new favorite is the crème brûlée.

Another new local find is The Coffee Society. Formerly located downtown at Mesones 53 in the historic Meson de San Ignacio at the corner of Relox, they moved in November 2025 to Sollano #78 near Parque Juarez. I have been several times and always enjoy talking to Jesús Muñiz the owner. He roasts everything onsite with coffee beans that are grown in the Mexican state of Veracruz. They also have some breads and pastries. I enjoyed their latte,  the lavendar latte and the macha latte. I hope you will stop in to support this small local business and enjoy it as much as I do. I went a few days after it opened on Jesus and enjoyed another macha latte. They have a small number of seats, but you can always take out head to Parque Juarez at the end of the block.

Opened in January 2026 is CAFÉ TURCO at Del Pueblito #5. The owners Oguz and Idil, who are from Turkey/Türkiye, moved to San Miguel a year and a half ago with their two children after falling in love with it. This small cafe, next to the Liceo de la Lengua, carries Turkish coffee and tea and other coffee drinks along with their traditional Turkish baked goods including baklava and simit, a Turkish bagel. They have breakfast dishes for brunch on weekends. I went for the first time in March 2026 and loved meeting the owners. I had a great latte and the best baklava. Please go and support them as it is a small place and the street is rather quiet.

Nearby at Insurgentes #71 near the corner of Hernandez Macias is Café KUSA. Opened in late 2025, this is a small coffee shop offering coffee and tea drinks along with pastries and some food items including their popular smash burger. I went in April 2026 for a latte at the suggestion of a friend who frequents it often. I enjoyed visiting with Diego, the delighful owner and sitting with him on the small outdoor patio in back. I also loved seeing his dog Spooky who is loved by his customers and their children. Diego sources the coffee from the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Chiapas and Veracruz and the food ingredients from local vendors. I hope you go and support him! I look forward to going back.

After my latte at Café KUSA, I stopped in a new gelato shop Piquito Gelato at Relox #53. They have a number of flavors to choose from, but I really enjoyed a cup of the coconut on a warm afternoon.

Chan Selvita opened its doors on December 2025. Originally in Tulum, Mexico, San Miguel is their second location. They offer specialty cacao drinks, artisanal chocolate, pastries, organic products and more. Having read aout it, I went in April 2026 for the first time. It is a small cafe on the second floor of San Francisco #1, at the northeast corner of the Jardin Principal. I enjoyed meeting the owner, Benado who said that their organic cacao/chocolate and coffee comes from the State of Chiapas. By buying these products they support the local farmers. They have a large number of chocolate drinks as well as 70 and 100% artesanal chocolate and candy. There are also smoothies, tea and food items.  I really liked the Caneloni hot chocolate made with cinnamon along with s piece of dark chocolate with nuts, almonds and sea salt.

One of my favorite spots is  La Sacristia Café, from the owners of Zenteno Cafe. Located at Canal 36, they feature a full coffee menu, pastries and more. On my first trip, I had a lovely salad and quiche for lunch on the colorful outdoor terrace in the back. I liked it so much and went back again with friends and loved the toast with brie, pear, serrano ham and a reduction of red wine vinaigrette. I also recommend the huevos Sacristia with smoked salmon, poached eggs and avocado cream along with a side salad and eggs Florentine which are eggs benedict with spinach and smoked salmon with a bechamel sauce.  Now I go every time that I am back in town. It is a great addition to San Miguel.

Opened in 1989, one of my favorite bakeries in town is Panadería La Buena Vida located in the back courtyard of  Hernández Macias 72. I always love their mutigrain bread with cranberries and pecans along with their muffins, almond and chocolate croissants, oatmeal raisin cookies and apricot and cranberry scones. They also make several types of empanadas which I buy when I am entertaining. Every Saturday that I am in town, I go to their stand at the Tosma Market at Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio #123, to stock up for the week. I always enjoy seeing the owner Melisa Sumner and her great staff.

Another new favorite is Café Amuleto located at Stirling Dickinson #2 around the corner from the Hotel Real de Minas which opened in early March, 2022. It is a small café with great coffee drinks  along with food and pastries. I enjoyed my latte and meeting the owner, David Briones, who roasts his own coffee from Chiapas in southern Mexico. I highly recommend it. I go back every time that I am in town. On Saturday afternoon, you can often hear live music.

Joleisa Reposteria, formerly at Stirling Dickinson 9A, has moved south to a larger space at Josefina Orozco 19 #4 across from Luna de Queso near Il Mercantino di Bella Italia. This is a new locally owned bakery, opened in November 2024,  featuring a menu of  cookies, brownies and coffee. I enjoyed meeting Leticia, the owner, and trying their tasty chocolate chip and nutella cookies. The cookies are huge and all baked in-house. I went back to the new location and had a great oatmeal raisin cookie.

Joleisa Reposteria

Another small bakery that I highly recommend is Dulce Belen Patisserie at Cajon. de las Moras #5D, near the corner of Prol. Aldama and La Quinta.  They feature a number of homemade pastries, breads, cookies and cakes. I have walked by many times and they never seemed to be open. But they have extended their hours and their new baker is Juan Manuel. I enjoyed meeting him and loved trying their cookies. I look forward to going back again and supporting this small business.

Dulce Belen Patisserie

After reading about a new coffee shop that had opened, I went to Bakora Café on March 5, 2025, just seven days after it opened. It is a small, casual cafe owned by Juan Jose Miguel at Relox 48 just south from La Biblioteca Pública. They specialize in specialty coffee drinks, toasts, sandwiches and salads along with cookies. It turns out that Leticia at Joleisa Resposteria is his wife and that the cookies are from her store. I enjoyed my latte and had a great conversation with Juan. I went back again with friends and had the best matcha latte. I hope you stop by and support this small local business.

Bakora Café

Nearby is CAYETANA RESTAURANTE at Hidalgo 33. I happened to walk by and saw it in March 2026 for the first time. It is a coffee shop and restaurant offering coffee drinks, pastries and a menu for breakfast,  lunch and dinner. I had a great latte and  wanted to go back and try the food menu, so I went back the next month and enjoyed a tasty eggs benedict with smoked salmon. It has a lovely design with both inside and patio seating. I enjoyed meeting the owner Raul on my second visit!!

CAYETANA RESTAURANTE

Opened in May 2025 is The Tea Room at Salida a Celaya 6 on the second floor. It is owned by Eve Mickendrow who owned a tea room in Charleston, SC for over 25 years before moving to San Miguel. The chef is Ryan McNab who grew up in Leeds, a city in the northern English county of Yorkshire. It has an attractive interior space and outdoor seating on the terrace overlooking the downstairs courtyard.

Open from 11am to 4pm from Thursday through Sunday, they offer a large selection of teas,  a lunch menu of salads, soups, sandwiches and quiche and an afternoon tea menu of several options including a traditional high tea. I chose the high tea and enjoyed the experience. In addition to the Earl Grey tea, it included three finger sandwiches, a small quiche, sausage roll, scones with clotted cream and jam and a sugar cookie and small lemon tart. I recommend the experience, particularly if you are celebrating a special occasion.

Also in Mercado Sano opened in December 2022 is La Mezquiteria. What I thought was a regular coffee shop was a totally new experience. Here they sell coffee roasted from the mesquite tree seedpods. I had a latte which had a rich, smooth flavor with just the right amount of natural fructose to add some sweetness. It was also caffeine free. They also sell some bars and sweets. I loved it and highly recommend that you try it. Andrea, the owner, was also delightful and so friendly.

I just went back again and thought their cold brew with milk was one of the best I have had anywhere. I now go back several times each time that I am in town.

I am a big fan of Panaderia El Maple, a Canadian bakery, located at Salida a Celaya #53. I always buy their multigrain bread for my breakfast every time I am back in town. They also have great croissants, cookies and muffins.

I always enjoy walking and searching out some of the new murals in Col. Guadalupe. It is one of my favorite neighborhoods in San Miguel to simply walk and explore. While you look at the street art, make sure to stop in for coffee La Tertulia Coffee & Garden at Cri-cri 11. I enjoyed my latte at La Tertulia. A local friend lives across the street and also recommends their breakfast menu as well as their lunch menu of salads and sandwiches

A short walk in Col. Guadalupe is a popular bakery, Sucrê Panaderia y Repostería. I stopped in for a sweet to go with my latte and loved their cookies. They also have bread, croissants and other pastries. I also read that their quiche is excellent. I just learned in January 2025 that they  moved from their former location at C. Margarito Ledesma 1 to H. Colegio Militar 4 which is a few blocks north. I look forward to visting again.

Nearby at Hernandez Macias 43B is a new find. I went to Divino Cielo Café in March 2026 for the first time. This is a coffee chain with multiple locations throughout Mexico including Chiapas where the coffee is grown. Located on the third floor this is an attractive cafe serving coffee and tea drinks, juices and more along with a food menu of sandwiches, salads and breakfast dishes. My iced latte was excellent as was my omelette. I was glad that I found it! They have both indoor and outdoor seating.

On the southeast side of town is the shopping center Plaza Comercial La Luciernaga at Boulevard José Manuel Zavala Z. 165.  Here you will find the newest location of Panio bakery and cafe. I highly recommend that you try Marulier, a French cafe and bakery whose owner is from France. I went for the first time and loved my cookies and latte.  The quality is excellent. They also have a nice outdoor patio where I happened to run into local friends. I went back again and enjoyed an excellent lox and bagel sandwich along with some yummy caramel macarons and a latte.

At Zacateros 83-A is the Olio Fino Tasting Room. Here you can find very high quality extra virgin olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars along with some tasty chocolates. The chocolates with Baileys Irish Cream and mezcal were very tasty.

For residents of San Miguel and those who spend a good amount of time there during the year, I suggest that you buy the VIP Club Card. For a reasonable annual fee, VIP club members receive a 10% to 15% discount on over 1oo restaurants and other services which can easily pay for the annual fee. Some require cash payments and others will accept the discount for both cash and credit card payments. I just renewed mine for my third year and found it to be a very good deal. You can buy the card at BajioGo, Jesús 11 or at other locations in town.
