Often called “The Pink City” Jaipur has opulent palaces, colorful bazaars and historic sights.

Make sure to visit:

Hawa Mahal: Also known as the Palace of the Winds, this focal point of the city was built in 1799 and has an ornate pink facade. It is five stories and adorned with delicate floral motifs and filigree windows.

City Palace Museum: This palace has been home to the rulers of Jaipur since first half of the 18th century. It has great Rajput and Mughal-style architecture. After touring the museum and palace, we had a wonderful lunch at the plaza on the terrace overlooking the gardens and a cricket match while being serenaded by traditional musicians. The pink/orange and white color of the buildings was great.

Shopping: Jaipur has some wonderful shopping particularly when it comes to jewelry. Make sure to visit Gem Palace which was established in 1852. I purchased several pieces of Jaipur’s famous blue pottery. You should also look for some of the miniature paintings that the area is known for.

Amber Fort: This was a citadel that was established in 1592. The centerpieces are the various buildings added by Jai Singh I during his reign from 1621-67. The Ganesh Pol is a great three-story gateway built in 1640.
