I was very impressed with the North Fork of Long Island. Here you will find beautiful farmland and many farm-stands featuring local fruits, vegetables, homemade jams, pies and honey, lavender fields and 44 wineries. You will drive through the charming small towns of Jamesport, Southold, Cutchogue, East Marion, Orient, Mattituck and Greenport. Greenport is a wonderful spot to base yourself and then explore the surrounding area, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Montauk and the Hamptons.
Orient: Is a charming town at the end of the North Fork. Don’t miss driving down Village Lane to see the small downtown with its quaint historic buildings.
Mattituck has some great wineries as well. Make sure to visit Love Lane with its small shops and restaurants. The Love Lane Kitchen comes highly recommended as a fun local’s spot. 240 Love Lane. Down the street is Magic Fountain for a large selection of ice cream. 2825 Main Road.
Lavender by the Bay: Don’t miss this lavender farm, just east of Greenport in East Marion. You can visit the gorgeous fields and then shop in their store where they offer lavender sachets, soaps and other gift items.
In Southold, make sure to visit the Horton’s Point Lighthouse along the Long Island Sound. There is a museum that is open on weekends.
